Letter to the Editor

James Chin MD, MPH1

1 Infectious Disease Section, California Department of Health Services, Berkeley, CA 94704

Rosenthal agrees that the prevention or modification of hepatitis B viral infections in infants is important, but is concerned about the safety of the hepatitis B vaccine, particularly regarding the possibility that this vaccine might transmit whatever may eventually be identified as an acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) agent. I welcome this opportunity to respond to his letter because the AIDS issue was just starting to emerge as a major concern at the time that I submitted my commentary.1
