Alternative to Diminishing Rural Pediatric Health Services

To the Editor.
I read with great interest the recent article by Budetti et al1 concerning trends in distribution of child health providers. Clearly it appears that, overall, there are fewer pediatricians practicing in rural areas and that a large share of health services to rural children are currently delivered by family and general practitioners. The authors suggest that this trend implies that rural access to pediatricians will continue to be limited and that efforts of the pediatric community should be directed toward training family practitioners to fill more of this role.
