Bad Effects of Patterning

To the Editor.
I would like to commend the American Academy of Pediatrics for its updated and strong statement against the "patterning" treatment of neurologically handicapped children.1
Certainly one of the problems with the promoters of this type of treatment has been their insistence that the therapy be carried out 365 days a year and as much as 22 h/day. In the best of circumstances, this will totally disrupt family life and divert attention from other children in the family, while at the same time, providing no benefits to the patient in question.
