I would like to compliment Lothe, Lindbery, and Jakobsson1 on approaching colic in a double-blind fashion. However, they failed to subject the data to appropriate tests for statistical significance. Their truth table would be (adapted from table 1 of their article): soy formula, adverse reaction, 32, no adverse reaction, 17; milk formula, adverse reaction, 43, no adverse reaction, 17; X2 = 1.61; P = .2.
Thus the conclusions should be that no significant benefit could be found in switching infants with colic to a soy protein-based formula.
