Membranous Laryngotracheobronchitis

James C. Denneny III MD1 and Steven D. Handler MD1

1 Departments of Otolaryngology and Human Communication, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia

The etiology, clinical presentation, and therapeutic strategies associated with membranous laryngotracheobronchitis are discussed. A case is presented in which a lateral neck radiograph gave the preliminary impression of a tracheal foreign body. Endoscopic examination of the upper airway revealed the correct diagnosis of acute membranous laryngotracheobronchitis. Comparison with the more commonly occurring viral laryngotracheobronchitis is made.
