Why Not Use Acetaminophen for Fever?

The recent "Special Report" of the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics, titled "Aspirin and Reye Syndrome"1 left me confused and disappointed. The Committee based their recommendations on a supposedly careful analysis of all the available data and concluded that, based on our current state of knowledge, aspirin should not be given to any child with varicella or with possible influenza. Although the evidence of a definite association between salicylates and Reye syndrome is tenuous at best, I probably would agree with this conclusion.
