Shock and Allied Forms of Failure of the Circulation

Essentially, this volume is an exhaustive review of the world literature on the laboratory and clinical investigations of shock, and as such constitutes an excellent reference text. As indicated by the title, the author's interest is oriented around the circulatory aspects of shock. He provides a "biologic definition of shock" as a ". . . generalized impairment of the circulation caused by any form of stress or injury which reduces the output of blood from the left ventricle of the heart to a level below that needed for normal cellular function and metabolism."
