THERAPY OF TUBERCULOSIS IN INFANTS AND CHILDREN
1 The Department of Pediatrics, Temple University School of Medicine, and St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, Philadelphia.
Streptomycin, or dihydrostreptomycin, along with other agents, such as promizole® or PAS, is of value in the treatment of serious forms of tuberculosis in infants and children. Progressive pulmonary tuberculosis and miliary tuberculosis seem to respond most satisfactorily. Tuberculous meningitis has a serious prognosis but some patients apparently have this infection arrested.
The use of streptomycin for patients with forms of tuberculosis which have a good prognosis without treatment is not recommended. The potential toxicity of the drug and the possible emergence of streptomycin-resistant tubercle bacilli are the major reasons for this recommendation.
