On Dec 31, 1981, a brief story about a 7-year-old boy who died in a coma one month after ingesting 40 Tofranil tablets, appeared in The Washington Post (p A3). The youngster had wet his pants at school on December 1, and it is presumed that he inadvertently overdosed himself in the hopes of curing his enuresis. The potential lethal effects of imipramine are well known,1 and accidental ingestions have occurred in children less than 5 years of age more frequently than in children in other age groups.2
