THE FIRST PUBLISHED MORTALITY TABLE OF AMERICAN CHILDREN UNDER FIVE YEARS OF AGE (1842)

Mortality data for American children under five years of age, prior to the middle part of the last century, were rarely reported in anything resembling a statistical presentation.

The first to publish such data was Robert M. Hartley (1796-1881) in his Essay on Milk (Figure shows mortality table).1 His mortality figures were from Boston between the years 1811 to 1839.
