Letters to the Editor

Jeffrey C. Weiss MD1 and Allan R. De Jong MD1

1 Department of Pediatrics, Children's Health Center, Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA 19107

We read Dr Lighter's letter with interest and thank him for the helpful suggestions regarding accounting methods.

Our analysis reflects the nature of our educational model in a university setting, which cannot always be compared to a private practice. We cannot compete with the hospital laboratory and cannot charge for immunizations (we get vaccines free from the Philadelphia Health Department). In addition, patient fees, which are determined by the hospital administration, are much lower than those of practicing pediatricians.
