The economic analysis of the residents' outpatient practice at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (Pediatrics 66:91, 1980) piqued my interest, because I am firmly in favor of housestaff becoming better versed in the financial vicissitudes of private practice. I respectfully would like to offer a few suggestions that I feel would make the study more valid and provide a better teaching model for residents.
First, the program should stand on its own financial merits, and the hospital subsidies should be excluded in the economic analysis of self-sufficiency.
