The article by Zambrana, Hurst, and Hite (Pediatrics 64:862, 1979) has served the important function of stimulating thought on the role of the physician in counseling working mothers. This discussion should be extended to other areas of contemporary mother-infant behavior as well.
Women today are placed in a difficult, if not impossible, position vis-á-vis child rearing. The conflict begins with the decision of whether or not to interrupt a career in order to bear a child (or children).
