Meconium Plug Syndrome Associated with Cystic Fibrosis and Hirschsprung's Disease
1 Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut
We present a unique case of meconium plug syndrome associated with both cystic fibrosis and Hirschsprung's disease.
CASE REPORT
A term male infant with a birth weight of 3,300 gm was born by normal spontaneous vaginal delivery after an uncomplicated pregnancy to a 28-year-old white woman. During the first day of life abdominal distention was noted and the infant had not passed any meconium. At 28 hours of age a meconium plug was passed. Persistent regurgitation, abdominal distention, and infrequent bowel movements resulted in roentgenographic study with contrast of the upper gastrointestinal tract which was reported as normal. He demonstrated poor weight gain and was discharged at 2 weeks of age on soy formula.
