Opinions on Teenage Pregnancy Statement

Phillip C. Gioia MD1

1 Albany County Health Department, PO Box 685, Albany, NY 12201

I would like to comment on the American Academy of Pediatrics "Statement on Teenage Pregnancy" by the Committee on Adolescence (Pediatrics 63:795-979, 1979).

The Statement describes the environment leading to teenage pregnancies only in sociologic terms. This type of information is hard to apply in clinical situations. A review of longitudinal studies of factors antecedent to teenage pregnancies1-3 would be more helpful to clinicians trying to prevent unwanted teenage pregnancies. Individual psychologic changes may be directed as sociologic changes take place.
