Variable Susceptibility to Retrolental Fibroplasia: Effect on Case-Control Comparison of Pao2 Exposure

John C. Sinclair MD1 and Gary D. Anderson PhD1

1 Departments of Pediatrics and Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, McMaster University Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

The cooperative study "Pao2 Levels and Retrolental Fibroplasia" by V. E. Kinsey et al (Pediatrics 60: 655, 1977) seeks an association between occurrence of retrolental fibroplasia (RLF) and extent of prior exposure to oxygen as measured by arterial Po2 (Pao2). The approach used is a case-control analysis in which infants are grouped by outcome (RLF or no RLF) and compared with respect to prior Pao2 history. The authors hypothesized that infants with RLF (cases) would have had higher Pao2 values than infants without RLF (controls).
