Nearly 1 million teenagers drop out of high school each year.1 The failure of our public schools to design innovative and relevant curriculum is underscored in academic and lay literature as partially responsible for the enormously high drop-out rate.2-6 "Alternative education"7,8 which allows youngsters to choose particular topic areas,
has been suggested as an approach to this critical problem.
At the English High School in Boston, a very successful alternative program called M*A*S*H (Medical Alternative for Students in Hospitals) has been in existence for four years.
