Cholestatic jaundice occurring as the result of treatment with erythrornycin estolate is a well known entity in adults, but less than 2% of all reported cases occur in children under 12 years of age.1 Rarely has this adverse reaction been noted in infants less than 1 year of age.2 We present the case of a young infant who manifested clinical findings suggestive of biliary atresia following a course of treatment with erythromycin estolate.
CASE REPORT
A previously healthy 6-week-old infant was evaluated by his private physician for an acute illness characterized by fever (100.5 C) and irritability. There was no jaundice noted at this time, and other family members were well.
