Introduction of Beikost

Frederick P. Rivara MD1

1 University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195

I found the recent article, "Recommendations for feeding normal infants" by Fomon et al (Pediatrics 63:52, 1979) helpful and informative. However, I disagree with their conclusion that early feeding of beikost to help infants sleep through the night is undesirable.

With more than 30% of mothers with children under the age of 3 working outside the home, and with the ever increasing number of single parent families, factors that enable a parent to cope with raising a child under these circumstances must be advanced.
