This article describes the course of lactational reflex recovery in four patients who had symptoms of breast milk insufficiency. Following an initial history and physical examination, patients were evaluated at weekly intervals for response to treatment. In the mother, response to treatment was indicated by the onset of one or more of the following signs of reflex function: (1) areolar distention prior to a feeding, (2) tingling sensation in the breast during a feeding, and (3) contralateral milk ejection at the onset of a feeding. A return of lactational sufficiency was also monitored by weekly observation of weight gain in the infant.
