Taking Medications in School: Committee Report Challenged
1 Department of Pediatrics, Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital Cleveland, OH 44106
The rigid recommendations concerning the administration of medication during school hours, presented by the Committee on School Health of the American Academy of Pediatrics (Pediatrics 61:115, January 1978), are understandable in the light of recent major problems with drug abuse and the ever-increasing panic about potential liability of school officials and teachers. We believe, however, that these recommendations could be substantially modified without undue risk to allow many older children with chronic diseases to assume increasing responsibility in the management of their own illnesses.
