I am pleased to respond to Dr. Rucker's letter. He is concerned that our report of a 19% incidence of urinary tract anomalies associated with lung rupture is too high. Our study population of 6,236 infants showed a 0.75% incidence of pneumothorax, which is in the reported range. The diagnosis of lung rupture was made by roentgenography. The films would have been requested because of respiratory signs or symptoms. Dr. Rucker rightfully wonders about the babies with asymptomatic pneumothorax and whether they would have fewer renal anomalies.
