We recognize that the cost of blood cultures in our institution is reasonable and reflects the frequent use we make of this diagnostic procedure.

Our data show that a repeated positive blood culture occurred more frequently in children who were not treated initially with antibiotics. We cannot agree that the child with, for example, pneumonia or otitis media who is started on a regimen of oral antibiotics and subsequently found to have a positive blood culture is not at increased risk.
