Myositis and Influenza

Richard M. Buchta M.D.1

It was with personal, as well as intellectual, interest that I read the article, "Acute Myositis Associated With Influenza B Infection" (Pediatrics 57:255, February 1976).

In February 1976, both of my sons had an influenza-like illness associated with a transient myositis of about 48 to 72 hours' duration. I was aware of this phenomenon because of previous experience with similar cases. Mason1 described this mini-epidemic of myositis associated with influenza B.

My 11-year-old son, as well as my wife, developed symptoms of fever, malaise, and headache for three days' duration.
