The major thrust of our argument was that in the late 1970s it becomes important for American pediatricians to reexamine their roles in the provision of health care services for children and youth. This examination should take into account the changing size and distribution of the child population, as well as a number of biological, social, economic, and political factors, most of which are identified in chapters 2 and 6 of the Academy publication, Lengthening Shadows (1970).
