Errors in Insulin Dosage

Richard A. Guthrie M.D.1

1 Department of Pediatrics, University of Kansas School of Medicine, 2221 North Hillside, Wichita, Kansas 67219

The problem reported by Shainfeld1 in the August 1975 issue regarding errors in insulin dosage with various syringes is well known and has been reviewed by the Committee on Therapeutics and by the Committee on Diabetes in Youth of the American Diabetes Association (ADA). I chaired the latter committee last year during these extensive discussions. Recommendations were made by the ADA to the Food and Drug Administration for the development of syringes with minimal dead space and will probably be a part of the specification to be forthcoming soon.
