After reading the informative two-part article by Wray on "Child Care in the People's Republic of China,"1 I felt compelled to make the following observation.
One can only marvel at the accomplishments in health care described in the article, but one also wonders what the human cost might have been to accomplish those ends. The statement, for instance, that "It appeared, in all our conversations, that there is a remarkable coherence in the basic value system prevalent in China today," brings to mind previous reports on how such "coherence" has been accomplished.
