We agree with Stein and Shannon1 who concluded in the May 1975 issue that continuous analog recording of respiration and heart rate in the premature infant has investigational value beyond that of conventional apnea monitoring.
It is most unfortunate that commercial interests have plunged prematurely into the area. We were surprised and disturbed by the advertising enclosure that we received with a reprint of Stein and Shannon's article, which itself was marked "Compliments of Clinical Data, Inc."
