We are honored that Dr. Lightwood would take time from his activities on Menorca to comment on our article.
We are in complete agreement that it is difficult at times on clinical grounds alone to differentiate between viral and bacterial infections. We feel there is an urgent need for development of rapid and precise diagnostic tests for this purpose, hopefully of such form that they could be carried out in the practitioners' office. Lacking this at present, one must rely on experience and whatever information can be gained from practical laboratory tests such as the throat culture for streptococci.
