I agree with Dr. Chamberlin that the maternal competence questionnaire used in my study as one of the endpoints of adequacy of well-baby care does not deal with those important aspects of well-baby care that he identifies. However, at the time the questionnaire was developed,1 these aspects were not considered important by the practicing pediatricians sampled to determine what knowledge a mother should have in order to be "judged" competent in rearing a child during the first year of life.
