INFANT & CHILD IN THE CULTURE OF TODAY, reved. Edited by Arnold Gesell, M.D., et al. New York, Harper & Row, 1974, $9.95; 420 pp

Robert W. Chamberlin M.D.1

1 Rochester, New York

This is a revision of the 1943 book by Gesell and Ilg. The purposes of this new edition, as stated in the introduction, were to rewrite the original in more modern language and to update some of the sections, particularly the one on culture. The authors have added more theoretical material on "cycles of development" and expressions of individuality, and one new descriptive stage of development for 3frac12 years of age. In addition, the nursery school data from each stage have been pulled together into a separate new section that discusses the behavior of children of different ages in nursery school settings.
