I have just finished reading the proposed plan for recertification in Pediatrics. The aims of this document are laudable, and cannot be opposed by any pediatrician. However, I think a long look at the trends in education and certification is in order.
In the early 1920's a physician could take a three-week trip to Vienna and return as a pediatric specialist. By 1976 it had become necessary to complete a course of training and demonstrate competence by both written and oral examinations before being certified.
