Advertising and Income

Starkey D. Davis M.D.1

1 Professor of Pediatrics, The Medical College of Wisconsin, 1700 West Wisconsin Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53233

I am writing to raise again the issue of advertising in Pediatrics. In my view, the sole function of the journal is educational. It should not be a profit-making device for the Academy.

Everyone knows that medical journals can make money. All of us receive several free journals each month that are supported only by advertising.

I do not object to a few judiciously chosen advertisements in Pediatrics. However, neither Pediatrics nor the Academy should be dependent upon advertising revenue.
