A Question on Throat Cultures

Victor B. Abello M.D.1

1 The Kimbro Clinic Association, 310 West Chambers, Cleburne, Texas 76031

The article by Drs. Katz and Clancy1 on the home throat culture was well received here because of the importance of throat culture and its interpretation.

As a resident, I notice only those patients with positive beta-hemolytic Streptococcus sensitive to bacitracin. The authors' statement that treatment should include a subsequent visit to the physician only if the culture is streptococcal-positive seems to bear out this thinking.

Although the majority of sore throat cultures will not yield Streptococcus because they are mostly viral,2 proper clinical screening will increase the yield.3
