It was interesting to read the letter from Dr. Tolby regarding prevention of automobile accidents. Certainly the discussion of automobile accident risk and prevention is a major component of good well-child supervision (and of good parenting). Many may find the Consumer Reports article referred to in the letter a useful guide. The major problem, however, is the same as seen with smoking or obesity, i.e., patient motivation. I often point out the relative risk of severe injury on the ride to the office versus the risk of injury from diphtheria which we present by the diphtheria shot given on arrival here.
