I read with interest the article on extracardiac anomalies by Greenwood et al.1 in the April 1975 issue of Pediatrics. In the Child Development Center of Childrens Hospital in San Francisco, it was apparent that a child with any major defect usually had accompanying minor abnormalities. These varied from simian lines to odd-shaped heads to mental retardation. I dubbed myself a palmist, phrenologist, and an alchemist. In hereditary conditions, a careful history and sometimes even a casual examination of the parents may reveal some minor anomalies.
