Pediatric journals at this time reflect a welcome trend toward the acceptance of research findings related to those aspects of pediatrics which heretofore were not considered sufficiently important, sufficiently researchable, or of enough interest to deserve publication. This includes subjects such as health care delivery and behavioral pediatrics.
Attempts to take "hard" looks at what have heretofore been considered "soft" principles are mandatory if humanism and comprehensiveness are to survive as integral features of medical care. The studies by Helfer and his associates in recent years have been outstanding examples of such efforts, especially in relation to the education of undergraduate medical students.
