Pedodontics

Barton Schmitt M.D.1

1 Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, University of Colorado Medical Center 4200 East Ninth Avenue Denver, Colorado 80220

The new section on Pediatrics for the Clinician has been a fine addition. I would like to comment on two excellent articles that dealt with pedodontics.1,2

Ripa emphasized fluoridation and diet in preventing dental caries.1 He deemphasized toothbrushing because"the efforts of the dental profession to motivate patients to adopt frequent brushing habits have been poor."1 From my experience, it is much harder to change a family's diet than to persuade them to "brush after meals."
