We appreciate the opportunity to respond to Dr. Holzman's comments. The obstetrical data were not presented because in this small number of cases, no significant preexisting problems were present. One of us (C.R.B.) was present at each delivery and no significant intervention was required beyond bulb suctioning and oxygen.

Two infants were delivered by cesarean section, both in the <16-hour group. These were infants 1 and 2 in Table I; one developed RDS and one did not.
