The Fetus & Newly Born Infant: Influences of the prenatal environment, by Roger E. Stevenson, M.D. Saint Louis: The C. V. Mosby Company, 1973, 391 pp., $30.25

Victor Chernick M.D.1

1 Winnipeg, Canada

This excellent book represents what must have been a tremendous effort by Dr. Stevenson. His objective, clearly stated in the preface, was to "catalogue forces in the maternally imposed environment that can penetrate the protective mechanisms available to the fetus and significantly alter the outcome of pregnancy." This objective has been amply realized in a critical review of important topics. The author clearly points out areas where scientific evidence, in contrast to testimony, is available and provides the appropriate reference material.
