A Silent Tragedy: Child Abuse in the Community, by Peter and Judith DeCourcy. New York: Alfred Publishing Company, Inc., 1973, 231 pp., $6.95

Vincent J. Fontana M.D.1

1 New York, New York

Peter and Judith DeCourcy have written a splendid book on child abuse. It certainly should be read by every professional and nonprofessional, and every citizen with a conscience.

It is difficult to accept the fact that in our society today, inhuman cruelty to children appears to be rapidly increasing and that the perpetrators of these crimes are for the most part not strangers, but parents themselves. In this book, the DeCourcy's accurately describe cases of child abuse and the problems encountered when dealing with such cases.
