A Manual of Newborn Medicine, by Gerard Van Leeuwen, M.D. Chicago: Year Book Medical Publishers, Inc., 1973, 287 pp., $9.95

Saul Adler M.D.1 and Mary Ellen Avery M.D.1

1 Montreal, Canada

The preface to this paperback manual states it is a "think and do" book, emphasizing the "do." It meets the challenge admirably by its emphasis on common conditions, an excellent chapter called "Procedures," routine orders for medical and nursing care, and highly specific recommendations on management of well and sick infants. The writing is lucid, and at times appropriately light-hearted. The test of any manual is to see if it meets the need for which it was intended.
