Management of Idiopathic Hyperbilirubinemia in Term Infants: Community Practices

Norman Lewak M.D.

The management of idiopathic hyperbilirubinemia in term infants in a pediatric community was surveyed. Babies admitted to a pediatric medical center had significantly less days of high bilirubin since the introduction of phototherapy. Five percent of babies in three community hospitals received phototherapy. The number of babies in whom jaundice was noted, the investigation of the jaundice, and the use of phototherapy varied greatly in the community hospitals. Physicians need to evaluate their own strategies in dealing with idiopathic hyperbilirubinemia.
