Letter to the Editor

Thomas R. Walters M.D.1

This is to express my disappointment in your publication of "Anesthetic Risks in Sickle Cell Trait." Reference words in the abstract such as "sickle cell trait, anesthesia risks, and sudden anesthetic death" expand the implication of the title.

There are several criticisms. Case 2 in the Table identifying the five Negro children with sickle cell trait shows hemoglobin electrophoresis results as S-C. Current terminology in sickle cell disease indicates that this patient has a double-heterozygote state, is not a patient with sickle cell trait and, therefore, cannot be included.
