Umbilical Catheters and Hepatic Abscesses

Yves W. Brans M.D.1, Ricardo Ceballos M.D.1, and George Cassady M.D.1

In contrast to interstitial hepatitis which often accompanies septicemia, solitary liver abscesses are rare in newborn infants. Thirteen cases appear in the literature. A single recent report implicates an umbilical venous catheter as the responsible agent. The present observations provide clinical as well as postmortem evidence which again strongly incriminates an umbilical venous catheter.
