Letter to the Editor

Stanley L. Harrison M.D.1

1 American Academy of Pediatrics

The Academy appreciated Dr. Aronson's comment on the maternal role of the working mother. As one who was involved in most of the discussion during the preparation of the Executive Board's statement, I can assure her it is not the intent of the Committee, Council or Board to perpetrate the myth that the good mother is one who obtains her sense of fulfillment primarily from the maternal role as she states in her letter. Instead, we were simply stating a fact that an increasing proportion of mothers are not at home to fulfill the maternal role in care and guidance and as a consequence the child needs this care outside the home.
