The Academy's "Policy Statement on Day Care" published in the May issue of Pediatrics placed appropriate emphasis on comprehensive developmental services needed by many of the nation's children. However, on behalf of the Day Care Committee of the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, I wish to express concern about the implication in the second paragraph that the choice of a work role by a mother is to be condoned only as a necessary evil of economic or social misfortune.
