Report of Severe Herpes Zoster in a 13frac12-Year-Old Boy Whose Chickenpox Infection May Have Been Acquired In Utero

Joseph H. Lyday M.D.1

1 500 Downing Denver, Colorado 80218

The onset of this present illness may have occurred 13frac12 years ago when D.L. was of about 7 months' gestation in the uterus of his mother who had contracted chickenpox from her then 4- and 7-year-old children.

Mrs. L. was severely affected with chickenpox and required hospitalization at Colorado General Hospital. She developed a confluent eruption over her entire body. She was febrile, delirious, and comatose for several days with chickenpox pneumonia, and was attended by Dr. C. Henry Kempe. Mrs. L. recalls that Dr. Kempe had requested that if her unborn child ever developed chickenpox he would like to hear about it.
