Letter to the Editor

It was with great interest and pleasure that I read the article written by Naeye, et al.,1 the Commentary by Reynolds and the Letter to the Editor by Tow3 describing the successful use of steroids in hyaline membrane disease.

The use of adreno-cortical extract in pediatrics, its beneficial effects in adrenal hypoplasia of the newborn,4 on the respiratory system of the newborn,5 and its possible use in atelectasis6 (a term previously used to describe the respiratory distress syndrome and now termed hyaline membrane disease), was reported in 1950, 1951, and 1952.
