Ichthyosis and Methotrexate: Reply to Words of Caution

The article by Drs. Jetton and Eby on ichthyosis and methotrexate therapy in the May issue of Pediatrics1 raised some issues which perhaps can be clarified. In treating our patient with nonbullous congenital ichthyosiform erythroderma (CIE)2 we embarked on a trial of methotrexate with trepidation, but did so because the little girl in question was a complete social outcast due to the severity of her disease. Despite higher than average intelligence, the local public school refused to accept her and no appropriate facility could be found for schooling.
